Dawn

Is this what happens after God?
A pellucid calm over a spine of rooftops
that juts above the boxwood's broken bower,
the tired walkway stones, oil-stained drive,
the quiet car in a bridal shroud of mist
and a tinge of old exhaust?
                                     Is this the amnesia
the saints experience, spent with unanswered silence?
After her last, beseeching night, St. Catherine of Sienna
slept, then bolted upright in her cot, crying "Oh, blood!"
as the driven, rising sun collided with her forehead,
her stalked body suddenly and finally stiffening skyward
in blue exile, her native shadow blooming in her light-struck wake.
