Thanks to all who have replied, esp. E Christopher Lewis, who reminded me
about xmodmap.

To Corrado, do as E suggests, and add the following line to your .xinitrc
(before your wm starts):

xmodmap -e "keycode 22 = BackSpace"

I've never noticed a highlighting problem, but you might be able to fix it
in the color preferences.  As for editing web pages, use a text editor ;)
