This is caused by the way the LCD screen shows colors.
Try open the screen almost completely flat, 
put your eyes just above the keyboard level
and look at the screen at such a sharp angle.
The highlight is clearly visible then.

The effect is clearly apparent when you run the X server at 16 bit depth
(65536 colors), look at some real life picture (e.g. in Netscape or xv;
not gif, jpg is fine), change the viewing angle 
(move your head higher or lower) and watch how the colors change.
I found that for viewing bright areas (close to white)
it is better to put your head low.
