To initialize the modem, make the symbolic:

ln -s /dev/cuaX /dev/modem

where X represents the COM port number of the modem minus 1 (eg COM2=cua1).

I get the unknown PCI hardware message myself, but it has nothing to do with the
modem.  Mine has to do with the CPU (!) and something else whose name escapes me
(I think the 16 Megs of memory on the board).

Since the subject has turned up, does anyone know how to get Linux to recognize
the "built in" 16 Megs?

My "i686" CPU works fine apparently.
