Ok..as far as the scrolling thing goes.  I don't know if there is an 
official way to do it or not .... I don't think so.  However, I'd suggest 
setting up multiple xconfig files or (I think this is possible) just using 
a commandline setting to force 800x600 mode when entering X.  It's not an 
elegant solution, but it would work.  Unless you can't get out of X, then 
you have a problem I don't know how to handle.

The problem is that I have to set up the screen in 1024x768, then switching
down to 800x600 because of limited-resolution projectors (hence I cannot
restrict the Virtual initially to 800x600).

Any hints about the BIOS settings to prevent crashes on X-server shutdown?
