Hi Rob,
A simple (hopefully correct) explanation is that a real
modem device does MOdulation-DEModulation. A
WinModem uses the CPU to do the signal processing.
It is software driven and therefore will not work under
Linux. Perhaps some technoweenie out there could code
up a LinModem.
I urge you to let Dell know that you are pissed off. They
advertise this internal (infernal?) device as a modem, which
it is NOT.
