Sorry to bother you again,

I still couldn't get the OSS/Free package to work. Using sox' play
command from the console, I discovered

Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error?

messages that I previously missed when issuing commands in an
xterm. This error message is odd, because I removed all my PCMCIA
cards, and both IR and parallel port are disabled. There shouldn't
be anything left causing IRQ or DMA conflicts, but to be sure I
tried several combinations of IRQs 5 and 7 and DMAs 0, 1, and 3.
(Unlike many other people, I have sound compiled into the kernel
rather than a module.) In any case, I got the same cracks and
garbled output. (NB. These symptoms show only for sound files that
are longer than about two seconds.)

Finally, I downloaded the driver's commercial cousin, OSS/Linux,
installed it and voila! Sox, playmidi, x11amp, Real Audio,
everything runs like a charm (for twenty minutes, that is :-). So
unless someone has a spontenous idea what the problem with OSS/Free
might be, I guess I'll just shell out those $20.

Anyway, thanks to all who tried to help me.

Ralph
