Fortunately, I just got mine to work.

Is this the OSS/Free or the OSS/Linux sound driver?  Given your
description below, I assume it's the latter.  If one of your sound
devices is missing, you'll have to create them manually; either the
OSS/Linux README or the Sound-HOWTO describes how to do that (I
never had to).  Also make sure that you have write access to the
device.  Note, however, that above error message might also be due
to selecting the wrong sound card.
