Well, whatever the reason, using LOADLIN instead of lilo is the key.
Yesterday I set up lilo and the sound no longer works. I haven't tried
LOADLIN since then but I have no reason to think that it wouldn't work.
Now I have to decide if getting sound is worth the hassle of using LOADLIN.
:(
Also I noticed that the sound stopped working after an APM suspend/resume
cycle. One more thing to fix..
