This is a problem with conflicting interrupts - apparently the PCMCIA controller
code gets surprised by someone else using the interrupt it picked. According to
the howto, it is typically IRQ12 that is at fault. Read the PCMCIA howto, it is
discussed in there.
I booted Win95 and wrote down who used what interrupts... found that IRQ9 was
unused and forced the PCMCIA controller to use that one. This was a brute-force
approach, but I was sick of rebooting the hard way and it worked. While I was
experimenting, I would do a "sync" and then a "pcmcia start" so I didn't trash
my HD when it hung and I had to do an ungraceful reboot.

I can't even get the PCMCIA configuration to work. I get to the "modules"
section
of the bootup and it locks up. It works this way whether the PCMCIA gets loaded
at boot time or manually when I use "/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start".
The card is a 3com 3c589D, which has difficulties in some versions of the newer
PCMCIA 3.x driver. Funny thing is that it is one of the first cards listed as
"supported".
Thanks,
Kevin Long
