Ok, sorry for the bad post last time here is better info
XFree has acquired (been given) code from a variety of sources. See
http://www.xfree86.org/majcontrib.html for details. The excerpt relevant
to the current discussion is.
Red Hat and Precision Insight are providing Linux binary-only X servers
for some new video hardware (this
currently includes the Intel i740 and a range of NeoMagic chipsets). Where
possible these servers will be
integrated into the next XFree86 source release. The NeoMagic driver is
the first of these to be integrated,
and it is available (with source) in XFree86 3.3.3. Information about
these servers can be found at:
http://www.precisioninsight.com/products.html.
Note: None of these X servers are supported by The XFree86 Project. Please
direct all support questions or
comments to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The offical term for Xfree "helpers" is sponsors

Amoung these is ATI technologies. Note neomagic is not listed, and I
believe in general not helpful. I think the drivers were developed with a
lot of reverse engineering. Which is why I specifically bought a I7K not
an I3.xK or a Latitude.
