The 3.3.3 Xserver can be made to work in a couple of different ways--see
http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/#xserver
Since I have an I7k with a 13.3" screen, I used the vesa frame-buffer
method described at the above site. Steve provides a precompiled
2.2.0-pre6 kernel along with modified XF86Config files. I ended up not
being able to use the precompiled kernel for some odd reason, so I
downloaded the 2.2.0-pre6 source and compiled it myself (first time I'd
done that; I learned a hell of a lot). At any rate, I know it's configured
as it should be for my system--Steve's kernel config will work for you,
I've no doubt, but it's nice to have control. :)
The 3.3.3 Xserver/vesafb solution *does* work, but it's not perfect. It's
definitely usable at 1024x768x24bpp, but there are occasional fleeting
lines of distortion. For me, it's a better solution than plunking down
US$160 for the Xig Xserver, but as soon as brainier folks than me refine
the XF86 server or the vesa framebuffer implementation, I'll be one of the
first to jump on it.
Thanks for the work on that, Steve. It's definitely appreciated.
