OpenSolaris can use free space on your hard disk, or it can use the whole disk. There is currently no option to resize existing partitions, as there is in many Linux distributions. Your best bet is to use the gparted live CD from http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ to create some free space on your hard disk, then install OpenSolaris into the free space.
