You could consider the "nevadas" to be the baseline
reference system which is used to construct distros
like Belenix, OpenSolaris, Nexenta, ....

OpenSolaris 2008.05 was built on top of nevada build
86; I'd guess the next one (on a ~6mo release cycle,
it is due soon) will be built on top of one of [99..102]. 
The OpenSolaris [he hunts for the right word - community, 
group, team, folks, pick one] take whatever nevada build 
they want to base their next release on, add their new
and experimental special sauce (like ips, cayman 
installer, zfs root) and produce a new OpenSolaris iso.

Once they are happy with their code, they put their 
additions and changes back into one of the various 
nevada consolidations (ON, install, SFW, ...) at 
which point the new features show up in the next nevada 
build.  For IPS, that has not happened yet.
