Other than simply disagreeing, can you provide some reasons why this 
layout would unacceptable to users?

It's exactly how my server at home is partitioned (albeit mirrored, and 
I've allocated the remaining space as slices which I've given to ZFS), 
and it's exactly how my laptop is partitioned, except that I used the 
remaining space for an /export partition.

Nothing stops them from blowing away the LU partition if they choose not 
to use it.
Nothing stops them from using the remaining space as they see fit.

The real issue is that we don't have a nice groovy GUI based disk 
partition magic type thing that makes it easy for users to make these 
kinds of changes.
(someone please pipe up and say we do, but I just don't know about it)
