Downloading and Burning OpenSolaris. I decided to experience the above, using build 49. The DVD image is 249.75 MB bigger than the CD counterpart. There is no explaination what consumes this extra space.
I use Download Accelerator Plus (a free program) to help to speed up the download. It launches 25 connections although at 10 connections it achieves the same throughput. After a couple of hours, everything finally installed on my Dell Inspiron 8500. I'm curious to know why: 1. the DVD is 250 MB larger 2. we can't make the download smaller by making some items optional. Since I'm using it for notebook, there are many things I don't need. Suggestions to improve customer experience: 1. Reduce size by making some features optional. Things like SAN driver, applications (apps server, MQ, etc), documentation, languages (except English) can perhaps be made optional. 2. Reduce the number of manual steps. Steps here can mean simple things like mouse clicks and typing, or longer things like burning CD. For example, if we reduce from 6 CDs to 4 CDs (the total files actually fit into 4 CDs), that would mean a lot less manual steps. 3. No need to zip the file. The unzipping is a manual process, and it easily takes 2 x 6 minutes. Having longer download is fine, as it's an automated process. 4. In the DVD option, use 1 file instead of 5 files. Since download can be resumed if it's broken, there is really no need to have 5 files. For the DVD option, we should aim for simply Download - Burn - Install. Belenix 0.5 is a good example.
