I think you are assuming that current architecture will be followed in Caiman 
and  Live Upgrade will be the  same.  What if, we never really call anything 
live upgrade but simply upgrade and hide the issues.  One can potentially do 
that with ZFS root.  I would be more interested in understand the problems.  I 
think one concern that you have is space for multiple releases.  I would
