When you untar the package, it must contain either README or INSTALL files. And these will tell how to start using it.
Since you are telling that, you unzipped and then untarred the package, I am assuming that you have downloaded the source bundle of firefox. So, you will need to build the source and then install. Usually these are the steps that are used to install a opensource product: ./configure make make install For configure, there will be some options and you will have to see the documentation to understand them. If you want to take the defaults, then you can run it without any options. And 'make install' will try to install it on /usr/local/ path and for this you will need to be logged in as root.
