Hi chrisblz,

Apple Intel hardware uses EFI firmware instead of a BIOS. To allow most
operating systems (Windows, OpenSolaris, Linux...) to run, Apple has an
emulation layer called "Boot Camp", which makes it look like a BIOS is present.
Unfortunately, this layer is incomplete, and does not include USB support.

This means that if you want to boot from USB, your operating system needs to
support EFI booting. Right now only Mac OS X can do this well on x86 (Windows
can do it on Itanium, but that doesn't help you.) There's a small effort to get
Linux to boot from USB on Macs (
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=995704 ), and while it is possible,
it's difficult to get it working. I doubt OpenSolaris will support this quite
yet, hopefully in the future!
