There has been significant concern expressed by multiple OpenSolaris core contributors that Sun's installation and packaging efforts are bypassing the OpenSolaris community. I share those feelings, but can quite easily understand how that happens when those inside Sun have significant communication, planning, and direction set outside of OpenSolaris activities. I encourage Sun and Sun's various employees involved here to try to share as much background as possible as to how they have gotten to where they are now. Saying things like "this will be discussed at the summit" is a slap in the face to those that will not have the opportunity to attend. In the spirit of being "Open" I encourage the various core contributors of the Sysadmin and Installation & Packaging communities to throw their +1's toward Brian for this. It does not mean that it gets integrated - it is simply a follow-up on the promise that the community matters. If it turns out to be better than Sun's efforts, I would expect that it would be integrated into OpenSolaris. If one or more of the non-Sun distributions find it more appropriate for their efforts, I would expect that a mechanism is found for the two systems to coexist in the source tree. Brian - As things progress, I will be quite happy to review design, help out with thorny sysadmin issues, etc. I am particularly interested in how this could work zones and how things like BFU, BlastWave, etc. could fit into the overall architecture. I highly doubt that I will have much time to contribute a lot of code. -- Mike Gerdts http://mgerdts.blogspot.com/
