That's 2 extremes. I agree that software installed by
the system onto a ystem is part of the system view. I
also think that if a user installs something into their
private space ($HOME) then the system has no business
whatsoever even knowing it exists.

But there's another possibility - user installed software
on a particular machine. Developer installs Sun Java App
Server into a place on the local system that they own or
have access to. Should that be part of the system view
or not? (Or should the installer have the option of
registering that installation so the system knows about
it?)
