I currently have a x86 b114 system, and needed to upgrade in the hopes that it would fix the server hanging once/2months. I have been told the snv releases are to be EOL, and should move to OpenSolaris.
I downloaded the osol 2010.02 preview build 124. First time around, I boot console only, since i just want to upgrade, and don't want to bother having to find a mouse. Alas, this just leaves you with a Login prompt and no clues as to how to login. Reboot again and suffer through the LiveCD boot times. It does ask me for my language, and usually I just go with US defaults, but it did list UK English as an option, so I thought that would be nice. Then it asks me for keyboard type, usually I just hunt around for the US mapping, but what the hell, I'm trying something new, and it IS a Japanese keyboard layout. Eventually, LiveCD boots, and boots into Japanese. Why? Why even both asking me for language (to which I said UK English) if you are just going to ignore it, just because I have a Japanese keyboard? I knew I should have just gone with the default US, and change it later (like I have for the last 10 years or so). Find mouse, learn about both root password and jack/jack. Sigh. Attempt to sudo to root, but jack isn't in sudoers. Hah! Why even include sudo? su it is. After that, I attempt to install. I am told by the installer that it can not Upgrade. Blast! Why EOL something before you can actually migrate from it? It suggests reading the Upgrade documentation, I click on that. Then apparently someone decided that it would be better to save some 10KB of ISO space by NOT including the documentation on the disk! It attempts to connect to sun.com, so now I need a working network connection as well. Sigh. Still, it is a preview. I have gone with snv 123 for now, I'll try again next time. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
