I happened to find the OpenSolaris System Administration document located here;

including the link to it, so that it may be found in the list archives. Just in
case anyone else encounters this issue in the future. It turns out that the
root_archive utility is version specific (as well as platform specific, already
understood). I was attempting to pack/unpack a Solaris 11 x86.miniroot archive,
on my Solaris 10 jumpstart server. Which is why the <minroot>/var/sadm/contents
file looked like binary junk. Thanks to everyone who replied.
