It's not a whole lot less difficult to type
pkg list pkg://contrib.opensolaris.org/\*
though undoubtedly an example would help. I wouldn't be against a -p
option to pkg list, though.
At some point I also want to spend a bit of time on the zsh completion
functions for this stuff, too, which would make this much easier to type,
too. But that keeps falling back in my priority list.

Sure; it would be useful to point to pkg(5) in the introduction of pkg(1)
for more information on terms and concepts.
