I don't know but the main problem should be heat, I mean a notebook
processor dissipates much less power than a desktop and probably the
cooling system of your laptop can't cool down the desktop processor.

The trouble of upgrading the mobile processor besides socket and
compatibility is where to buy it, I have only saw it on e-bay or such
places, never in a computer store (but I'm in Mexico so may on the US
you can get one easier).

I think it should be the TDP of the C2D is 35watts and your old one
was 31.
another thing isn't it Overclocked??? Intel site reports: Intel®
Core™2 Duo Processor T5600 (2M Cache, 1.83 GHz, 667 MHz FSB)  you say
it's 2GHz so may be that could be the problem, and last thing do you
renewed the thermal paste when you switched the processor?.
