Yes you are correct, Core 2 Duo's for instance use a different architecture to the pentium dual cores, this allows for the processor to run both cooler and faster. Example: If you have a 3.0Ghz Pentium Dual Core, it will be beaten easily by a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo because the latter model (Core 2 Duo) is of a more efficient build than the good old pentium.
