AFAIK SP3 was the only Service Pack where M$ broke with their usual pattern of adding more sugar to the treacle and actually improved things. Remembering back to when I last actually had a windows machine, SP3 definitely helped things all around. Not specifically gaming, and caused no hit on average RAM usage either out of the mix.
