I do use k-lite for quite some time, but you're not following what my problem is. I can watch every kind of video from 3gp to 1080p, but the image starts lagging when I turn on shaders on media player classic 6.4.9.1 rev 107, and that lag seems to be a bit random as the video can be smooth (this is only on sd, smaller than 720p, like avi and mpeg, if i want better i watch mkv, and my eyes bleed with rmvb) with my combination of 2 to 3 shader effects, while on other times and even with the same file it can be quite slow with just one shader effect, and a light one at that. I got to say that your volume problem is quite weird, but when installing k-lite you should be careful as some things should be installed, others shouldn't, and others still should be installed but with filters that are not selected by default. And even though there are a few versions of the pack, I prefer mega as it has real alternative and a few other little utils that saves me some time not having to download them individually.
By the way DanielPK, what is the chipset of your board? I ask because I have a 945gme with 2 slots of ram, with 2 dimms of 1gb each, and I was planning to buy a 2gb to replace one of the 1gb, but I've been having a weird difficult time in finding if it supports that memory size per slot. I sent a mail to crucial and they said it did support it, they even sent me a link to one of their 4gb, 2x2gb, dual channel kits, which I assume is their way of saying for me to go all out :) So you think I should go and get that ram? 2gb just aren't enough for me right now, specially having been using also a monster of a laptop that a friend of mine asked me to format, os install and tune up, and that baby had 6gb which was quite comfortable.
