The only time I've seen a crack actually mess a game up beyond belief is when I tried a crack that came with BFBC2. I would always stare into the sky, but when I patched and use a fixed image (to emulate a real DVD of the game), it worked great (note it still didn't work correctly after I only patched and use the normal exe crack)
