Bandwidth is plentiful thesedays, meaning video collections aren't
small, so uploading makes no sense unless someone uses heavily the
cloud, which I reckon not to be the case. Espionage is right,
encrypting it would be better. Compressing already compressed content
is pointless and time consuming.

As long as you have enough free space on your hdd, just partition it.
You could also tell your dad which files are needed to be backed up,
and he would do it since he wants to be the only one with access to
that external hdd.
