That's the same logic behind people using iBuds, Beats, Skullcandy, Bose, Wesc, iFrog, and other overpriced trashy audio gear. A little research goes a loooooooooong way. Those stereo speakers are outputting sound that the onboard chipset tries to produce will very low fidelity.
About the headphones, little example: a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre costs around $300 and is basically a big pile of smoking $h!t, while you can get a pair of Sennheiser HD 280 for less than $100 or a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50 for less than $130, and any of those have twice the sound of the Beats for almost 3 times less money. People think the audio hardware they have is enough, and that's mainly because they never listened to something out of the mass produced things. Give it a try...
