About the whole USB ports shortage, I'd advise you to carry a hub with you. I always have a 4-port one on me. You can plug the smaller devices and externally powered ones, like mouse, keyboard, camera, printer, 3.5" external hdd. What you should plug directly on the laptop's ports are dedicated sound cards, 2.5" external hdds, mobile broadband modems, etc.
