Hacking is looked as illegal unless someone hires you to do it on their own machines, period!). (Before you go overboard) BUT, the Hackers jargon (http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=hackers+jargon) specifies that hacking is to build and improve something. Take it as uh...FOSS (Free and open source software ) developing or something like that.
