I am afraid I do not have "the" answer to your question. All I know is that
editing and proofreading are in theory different things, i.e. editing
involves stylistic corrections and "revision in general", including
spelling, consistency, terminology... and is normally done by a different
couple of eyes; and "proofreading" is checking for typos, punctuation,
syllable division... when the text itself has already been okeyed. In real
life, those two are normally mixed up and the two terms are used to mean
"revision"...
Rates: It is advisable, and commonpractice among American agencies, to pay
such jobs "by the hour", because you never know how much work an
editing/proofreading job is going to take. It obviously depends on the
quality of the translation.
Usual rates among US agencies, according to my own experience, start at US$
25 or 30 per hour.
