Rich,

It's actually worse than that. Many email servers today won't permit sending of messages if the From address is not a _valid_ email address on the originating domain's email server (CommunigatePro is one widely deployed mail server that enforces this check). The server actually goes to the originating server with either an AUTH request, or a mailbox existence test via SMTP. Thus you have to either have it forge one of your existing mailboxes or create one for Intermapper.

A probably valid default value for this is the postmaster address (e.g. [EMAIL PROTECTED]). But you'd have to have to know a default domain name, and currently Intermapper doesn't have that value in its configuration.

Folks:

We're getting many tech support requests from people whose e-mail notifications
aren't working. The problem frequently turns out to be that they aren't filling
in the "Senders address" field in the preferences.

Apparently, their mail host is refusing to relay mail with a blank "From:"
field. And since they haven't filled in the "Errors-to:" field either, they
aren't getting notifications of the failures.

I'm reluctant to declare these fields to be mandatory - they're the first bit of
configuration that people would *have* to fill in to make InterMapper go.

So the question: Is there a sensible default for each of these fields? Is there
a value that a new (unconfigured) copy of InterMapper can set there that will
work in virtually all circumstances?

Thanks!
