Yes the need to display the remote state is essential.

If transparency is important to you, you might look at PNGs. There exist a
number of applications for Windows and Unix (the GIMP springs to mind) that
I'm pretty sure will handle PNGs and transparency.

Beyond that, what kind of thing are you thinking about when you say we need
"a cross-platform spec (independent of Mac centric code) for custom icons"
(your words)? Resource files are obviously out, and you don't seem to like
JPGs or PNGs. We aren't licensed to support GIFs at the moment, so they're
out.

Perhaps part of the confusion/misunderstanding is that you're still thinking
about the spec we use in the resource files for the black and
green/red/orange/yellow icons. Where JPGs and PNGs are concerned, any JPG
and many PNGs may be used. The drawback with using just any JPG or PNG at
the moment is that there's no way to show the state, but we expect that to
be addressed in the very near future. When it has been, will that be what
you're looking for?
