There are many choices. Like a wireless network out of the box phpbb is wide open for attack. It can easily be tightened with users having to read the squiggly code to register so spam bots can't. Users can be made to request permission to join and email addresses can be verified before authorizing. We run a board on our Intranet and it is the only one I have experience with managing but is is a breeze. There are many examples of it being used successfully on the web. For example:
http://forums.bombich.com/ http://forums.live365.com/ http://scriptsoftware.com/forum/index.php This "security" forum didn't lock theirs down so there are 3000 accounts and 99% are spammers: http://macscan.securemac.com/macscanforum/ All it costs is server space, bandwidth, initial configuration time and minimal management time. That's my 2 cents.
