- What equipment are you testing?
Senao Wireless access points (non snmp). I hear there is a probe in
Wispermapper, which would cost an extra few hundred or so. So I wrote my
own, which is implemented as a commandline probe. Its a bit ugly, and
doesnt seem to detect the particular version correctly yet (2611 vs 3054 vs
AP mode vs Client Bridge mode). Otherwise, I'd send up a copy.
Temperature sensing via 1-wirebus with digitemp. At the moment, this probe
goes into alarm above a certain temp. Ultimately, I'd like some
re-notifications here and the ability to update the name of the device to
actually include the temperature. Would be real nice if it send the temps
along with the text message I get (since this same single probe shows 3
different temps; under the floor, in server rack 6, and in the exhaust air
path of one of the vmware servers).
Also will be doing some custom SNMP stuff with printers, from if the device
does SNMP, it becomes easy, as all the example probes seem to be in SNMP
usually. Would be nice to have the "if.. then" type ordeal.
- Do you ever use the contributed probes at:
http://dartware.com/support/users/probes.html
Yup! last I looked, there were alot of older ones there, but at least they
can be re-worked. But we are indeed using a few from there. The printer
probe for example shows trays that are not to be monitored, and silly
things like "-1 = There is some ink left". Where I can write a custom
probe that should be able to poke at the device to figure out what kind of
printer it is, and if its an HP for example, look in a particular OID to
get the actual percentage of toner left in the cartridge. Its much easier
(for me) to do this in a shell script, but then I can't update the name of
the device correctly, and it remains as the IP, since our printers don't
have entries in DNS at the moment. (They are all shared off a common print
server).
- Would you be willing to share your probes with other customers? (We're
happy to publish them...)
Yup.
And for those of you building probes, what would you like to see in:
- Tools for creating probes that use the current facilities
- New facilties for retrieving information from devices
New facilities, as I'm guessing current facilities are snmp, and I usually
walk a whole device myself, and sort through the output. I'd really like
to see something where you can feed it a webpage, or some other sort of
text, and tell it how to look for certain things, and what to do if things
dont match something, and what to show in the status window and such.
