I forgot to mention that InterMapper also supports a behavioral option for devices where the DOWN status is automatically mapped to Unknown. This option is called "Ignore Outages" and it is available in the "Set Behavior..." dialog. This feature is designed for the situation where you have devices that you want to appear on your maps, but you don't want them to distract you by flashing red when they are turned off or unplugged. The "Ignore Outages" option should also allow you to treat test failures as unknown, without modifying the original test script.
