I expected the reprobe to occur at startup. That is something we can address and possibly disable with a code change in InterMapper. I would be very interested to know why the server doesn't start properly. I wonder if there are ownership/permission issues that are not properly maintained in the rsync? Your strategy one *should* work. If InterMapper is not behaving in a predictable way when you rsync, I would like to find the cause.
