Thanks for the tips.  I've done a great deal of troubleshooting today!
 
In the end, the paging provider was able to 'bridge' another pager that they 
had across our number, and they received the pages clear and complete, while I 
was receiving them garbled.

Apparently 2.5yrs is old for a pager, and it needs to be 'serviced'.  Sounds 
like a money-making scam to me!

We used to have trouble with this, though at the time we were using an  
email interface to qpage from Intermapper.

In our case it was usually noisy phone lines.  Being in the tropics,  
our telco often experiences trouble corrosion or water in the lines  
causing poor quality connections.  Our modems failing to connect with  
newer error correcting modulation schemes would fall back to older  
methods.  When using a terminal program to test the connection we  
would see bursts or even continuous streams of garbage.

We now send email directly to the paging company instead of using the  
dialup connection.
