You're right - the proper client behavior is try all possible choices to establish
a connection.
However, if you're a provider, you need to be sure that you're getting the right
behavior from all DNS Names/IP addresses.
For example, if you have web server on a dual stack host, it would be reasonable
to configure a HTTP probe for each "device" - the IPv4 and the IPv6 address, and
test them independently. That way, if something happened to the v4 host, you would
know about it.
This is analogous to testing a load balancer. Of course, you want a test that
connects to the "main" address/name and verifies that people can get through.
(This tests the load balancer function.) But as the network admin, you need to
test each of the underlying servers that stand behind the load balancer to be
sure that they're all operating properly as well.
