InterMapper doesn't impose any arbitrary limit on the number of probes in a probe group. In terms of amount of polling, adding 40 devices is definitely more polling, but I wouldn't expect it to matter that much. That said, the probe is pretty simple, and if you know the scopes involved, you could pretty easily make your own custom version that checks your 40 scopes in one probe; that would reduce the amount of polling, because you'd be checking things like the MIB-II information only once, instead of 40 times.
