The performance. Such class in PHP will be much, much slower than
language-level support of archives.

If such archives will be supported in PHP itself it will become
a standard way to provide software -- I will be able to use other
people's archives as well as mine ones.

I don't need source 'packed' with meaning 'crunched for size'. All I
want is a comfortable way to distribute pieces of software and I think
that using archives could decrease all that headache with directories.
I need a library, I download a library as one file and I can use the
library immediately -- isn't it attractive? :)
