The problem of web hosting remains, and isn't easily resolved. We already
saw what the situation is when it comes to web hosts and the distributed
.ini files; it's much the same when it comes to extensions. The better hosts
may well enable further extensions on request, but many won't - possibly
because they don't know how, or because they're in turn relying on a distro
that doesn't offer a wide range from PECL.
IMHO there needs to be some way to make recommendations to web hosts...

I agree with Jani here. It's a bit of a catch-22 but putting more popular
extensions into PECL should help.

He has a point..While I understand the desire to move things out of
core, we don't have any reasonable facility to put things into PECL and
be distributed to anywhere near the same number of people. Until we

a way to get the general population to consider PECL at the same level
they consider PHP, I don't see how we can ever really avoid putting
"experimental" code into core -- it's the only way it actually gets
tested and/or adopted on a wide scale.
