Puppy Linux is a very good OS for this purpose with older machines.
Newer machines, too...I have my own laptop set up to dual boot Window$
XP and Puppy Linux just because, if all I need is to quickly boot up
and connect to the Internet, Puppy boots up within 1 minute after a
cold start.

Using mplayer within Puppy Linux should work OK for most Windows Media
codec versions.
