I'm all for FM radios in cell phones... I just don't see why Congress or the FCC
needs to mandate it.  If the demand is there why wouldn't manufacturers add it
to the product?  The only (possibly) valid argument is public safety and
emergency communications.  Judging though from the number of local stations that
interrupted programming to notify residents in my area of tornado warnings last
week and this week, that's not a high priority of the FM station owners.

Not a bad idea...my little MP3 player has an FM tuner (though not an
AM tuner).  Since a Smartphone can easily masquerade as an MP3 player
as well as an Internet radio, it ought to be able to serve as a "real"
radio as well...

Alas, I don't think we'll see Sony 2010-scale shortwave functionality,
but one can dream...
