They *need* to mandate it in order to get their regular, expected
campaign contributions from the NAB!
I'm only half kidding. The NAB is one of the most--if not the most--
powerful lobby in Washington and distributes millions in campaign
cash. The cell phone makers with fight this suggestion tooth and
nail.... which will make them another valuable source of campaign
cash. As they say... "It's in the game!"

I'm all for FM radios in cell phones... I just don't see why
Congress or the FCC

emergency communications. Judging though from the number of local
stations that

owners.

Subject: [Internetradio] NAB Leaders: Consumers Deserve Radio-

Phones
Not a bad idea...my little MP3 player has an FM tuner (though not an
AM tuner). Since a Smartphone can easily masquerade as an MP3 player
as well as an Internet radio, it ought to be able to serve as a "real"
radio as well...
Alas, I don't think we'll see Sony 2010-scale shortwave functionality,
but one can dream...
