The main theme of the Convention is the fate of nationalities and of national and nationalist ideas in a world of globalization and economic and political integration. This includes the relation between national ideals and the process of transformation in Central Asia, the Caucasus, East-Central Europe and the Balkans, the question of political change and democratization in the post-Soviet area, as well as the prospects for systemic change in the post-communist world. The Convention will be held just two months after Poland and the other more advanced countries in the region join the EU while many other post-communist states continue to move back to authoritarian rule, twelve years after the fall of Communist system in East-Central Europe. The Warsaw Special Convention will consider proposals on topics related to national identity, nationalism, ethnic conflict and state-building in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and adjacent areas. The Convention invites proposals for individual papers or for complete panels.
