"Religion out of Place? Civil Religion, Nationalism and
Globaliztion in the 21st Century"
An Open International Conference
University of Copenhagen
Copenhagen (Denmark)
29-31 August 2005

Traditionally, civil religion and religious nationalism have
been linked to specific nation states. Due to the
globalization, migration, and intensified demographic
mobility of the last decades, various kinds of religion and
religiosity have been transferred to new and unusual
contexts. This conference seeks a more thorough
understanding - theoretically as well as empirically - of
the dynamic interrelations of migration, mobility, civil
religion and religious nationalism. In short, we would like
to find out what takes place, when religions of nations are
out of place, and what kind of conflicts that may arise from
this displacement.

Keynote Speakers
Anthony D. Smith, London School of Economics
Roger O’ Toole, University of Toronto
Pál Repstad, University of Agder, Norway
